South Australia State Nomination Requirements for Skilled Migrants

South Australia is centrally located on mainland Australia and the state offers a relaxed, safe, family-friendly lifestyle where you can achieve true work-life balance. The state is recognized for its migrant-friendly policies, providing multiple pathways to state nomination. Unlike some other states, South Australia allocates nominations on a first-come-first-served basis rather than through a point-based ranking system.

There are four key streams through which skilled migrants can seek state nomination:

 

  1. South Australian Graduates Stream:
    This stream offers state nomination pathways for international graduates who studied in South Australia. To be eligible, applicants must meet key criteria such as living and working in South Australia, being under 45 years of age, having a positive skills assessment, scoring at least 65 points on the points test, and fulfilling specific study and work requirements. Invitations to apply are based on various factors, including visa status and employment in priority sectors.

  2. Working in South Australia Stream:
    This stream is designed for skilled migrants holding a temporary visa who are currently living in South Australia and working in their nominated occupation. To be eligible, applicants must have a valid skills assessment, be under 45 years old, have at least Competent English (unless exempt), score at least 65 points on the Department of Home Affairs’ points test, and have resided in South Australia for at least 12 months. They must also have been employed full-time in their nominated occupation for the last six months. Invitations to apply for nomination will be issued throughout the year based on various prioritization factors, including occupation demand and sector priorities like Health, Trades, Digital Technology, and more.

  3. Highly Skilled Talent Stream:
    This stream provides a pathway for highly skilled migrants to contribute their talents and support innovation in the state. This stream is opened to individuals who can demonstrate their ability to bring new ideas and skills to critical priority sectors of South Australia’s economy, regardless of where they are living in. Eligible applicants must be under 45 years old, have a positive skills assessment for their nominated occupation, and score at least 65 points on the Department of Home Affairs’ points test. They must also meet specific criteria depending on their industry experience.

  4. Offshore Stream:
    This stream provides a pathway for skilled migrants who are currently residing offshore. The candidates will be assessed on a case-by-case basis based on merit by: the years and field of skilled employment, your English language ability, and your EOI points. If you are a highly skilled migrant currently living offshore, you may also be eligible to register your interest in state nomination through the Highly Skilled and Talented Stream.

To apply for this visa you must have a nomination from the Government of South Australia and meet all nomination requirements, as well as the Department of Home Affairs eligibility criteria.

To qualify for a South Australian state nomination, there are some key requirements that you must meet.

  1. Residency Requirement

    1.1 State nomination is provided to skilled migrants who are intending to live and work in South Australia with a view to long-term settlement. This is very important to South Australian Case officer is to check your genuinity of settling down.

    1.2 If you are located offshore, there are 2 pathways for you through Highly Skilled and Talented stream and Offshore stream.

  2. Age

    You must be under age of 45 at time of nomination

  3. Occupation

    You must have an occupation on South Australia’s Skilled Occupation list and meet the eligibility requirement to each occupation. Occupations are not determined by a particular title of your job, it can be varied and you have more than one options for state nomination submission.

  4. Skill Assessment

    you MUST have a valid and positive Skill Assessment from the relevant authority within 3 years from the application date and Skill Assessment must be for your nominated occupation. Each occupation has their own skill assessing authority, please refer to Department of Home Affair website for more information on Skill Assessments.

  5. Work Experience

    5.1 Each Occupation has their own employment requirement, please refer to South Australia’s Skilled Occupation List for specific requirement of your occupation.

    Generally, skilled work experience must be undertaken post-course completion and is defined as a minimum of 20 hours per week or 40 hours per fortnight of paid employment in your nominated or closely related occupation (But if you apply 190 visa through SA graduate stream, long-term resident SA stream and outer regional SA stream, you must have 30 hours per week or 60 hours per fortnight.).

    5.2 For South Australian work experience, the employer must have a demonstrable presence in South Australia. Where the employer is located outside of South Australia, applicants must apply though the Talent and Innovator program. Work experience performed at a residential address or shared office space for a company located outside of South Australia will be assessed on a case by case basis. 

  6. English

    Each occupation or each skilled migration stream will require different English level from the minimum requirement at Competent English (IELTS 6.0 all band and Overall or Equivalent) up to Superior English (IELTS 8.0 or equivalent).

    In general, if you are working in South Australia, you are required to have at least Competent English unless further requirements in your particular occupation.
