The Australian Government has released the 2025–26 skilled migration state and territory nomination allocations, arriving much later than last year’s July announcement. Now that the full-year numbers are confirmed, we can see clear shifts across the country – some challenging, and some offering strong new opportunities for skilled migrants.
While the total allocation has decreased, there are still promising pathways available, especially for applicants in priority industries. Read on for a concise breakdown of the most important updates.
1. National Allocation Drops by 5,910 Places
Australia’s overall skilled nomination allocation has reduced by 5,910 places compared to last year. This reflects a continued tightening of migration intake, with the government placing stronger emphasis on critical skills, genuine employment, and long-term settlement.
Although fewer places naturally mean more competition, strong, well-prepared applicants still stand excellent chances. This year rewards those who take proactive steps such as having their skills assessment ready, securing stable employment, and aligning their profile with state priorities.
2. Queensland Is the Clear Winner (+1,400)
Among all states and territories, Queensland is the only state to receive a substantial increase in allocations. The state gained +1,400 places, mainly through growth in the Subclass 190 visa.
This signals a more open and optimistic program for Queensland, creating valuable opportunities for skilled workers, graduates, and professionals looking to settle permanently in the state. Given Queensland’s historically lower quotas, this year’s increase is a significant positive shift and one of the strongest pathways available for 2025–26.
3. NT Sees Modest Growth While Most Other States Decline
The Northern Territory received a small increase of +50 places, offering slightly more room for local applicants and those working in regional NT.
Most other states experienced declines, including VIC and WA with the largest reductions (-1,600 each). These decreases mean states will be more selective, likely favouring applicants who are already contributing to their local workforce or who hold skills in high-demand industries.
4. Strong Demand Continues for Critical Industries
Despite the overall decrease in allocations, applicants in critical skill-shortage industries will continue to benefit from faster pathways and stronger invitation prospects.
High-demand fields include:
- Nursing & Healthcare
- Early Childhood Education
- Building & Construction
- Social Work & Community Services
States consistently prioritise these sectors due to urgent workforce needs. Skilled applicants in these industries can still expect competitive advantages and generally stronger chances of receiving invitations.
