Graduate staring at staircase

Last Updated: 05 November 2026

Following Australia’s major Student Visa changes in October 2026, international students now face tighter restrictions when changing courses or pursuing alternative study pathways.

For example, a student completing a Bachelor of Accounting who wants to pursue a Certificate III in Carpentry to explore alternative migration opportunities can no longer simply apply for another Student Visa while remaining in Australia, unless an exemption applies.

However, for eligible international graduates, the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) may provide another opportunity to explore different study and migration pathways.

With the flexibility to work and study while holding a 485 visa, graduates can potentially gain additional qualifications, develop new skills and strengthen their prospects for future skilled migration.

In this guide, we explore how you can make the most of your 485 visa and three study pathways worth considering.

Why Your 485 Visa Is More Important Than Ever

From 2 October 2026, the Australian Government introduced major restrictions on further onshore Student Visa applications, limiting the ability of international students to change their study pathways after graduation.

However, eligible graduates may still apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), which allows them to remain in Australia temporarily to work, study and gain experience.

Depending on your qualification and visa stream, the standard stay periods include:

  • 18 months: Post-Vocational Education Work stream.
  • 2 years: Bachelor’s degree and coursework master’s graduates.
  • 3 years: Research master’s and doctoral graduates.

Some graduates may qualify for longer periods under specific nationality arrangements or an additional regional 485 visa, subject to eligibility.

Unlike a Student Visa, the 485 visa generally allows you to work without hourly restrictions and undertake further studies without applying for a new Student Visa.

This provides an opportunity to explore courses in different fields, including vocational qualifications, while maintaining your ability to work.

The key is to use your remaining visa period strategically, rather than waiting until your 485 visa is close to expiry to reconsider your migration options.

3 Study Pathways to Consider During Your 485 Visa

If your existing qualifications or occupation offer limited skilled migration opportunities, further study in another field may help you develop additional options.

Here are three pathways worth exploring based on your interests, available time and migration goals.

1. Construction Trades – Affordable Courses With Strong Migration Potential

Best for: 485 holders looking for affordable, practical qualifications with skilled migration opportunities across multiple Australian states.

  • Courses: Certificate III in Carpentry, Wall and Floor Tiling, Painting and Decorating, Bricklaying or Glazing.
  • Study duration: Approximately 52 weeks for selected programs.
  • Estimated tuition fees: AUD 18,000–20,000 for selected courses.
  • Potential PR pathways: Skilled Independent (189), State Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491), subject to occupation and individual eligibility.

Important consideration: Most trade occupations require a formal skills assessment, which may involve at least 12 months of relevant paid employment after completing the qualification. Plan your study and work experience around your remaining 485 visa duration.

2. Commercial Cookery – Explore Regional Resident Migration Pathways

Best for: 485 holders willing to relocate to regional Australia, particularly the Northern Territory or Tasmania, to explore resident-based state nomination pathways.

  • Course: Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.
  • Study duration: Approximately 52 weeks.
  • Estimated tuition fees: From AUD $17,000.
  • Potential PR pathways:
    • NT Resident Stream (491): Generally requires 12 months of NT residency and 6 months of full-time employment, with ongoing employment and other eligibility requirements.
    • Tasmania Established Resident (491): Requires at least 2 years of residency and 6–12 months of qualifying employment, depending on income.
    • Tasmania Skilled Employment Pathway: May be accessible after 9 months of eligible employment for qualifying applicants.

Important consideration: These pathways do not necessarily require two years of local study, but applicants must meet residency, employment, skills assessment and nomination requirements. Your remaining 485 visa duration is especially important when planning a relocation.

3. Secondary Teaching – A Professional Pathway for Degree Holders

Best for: 485 holders with a relevant bachelor’s degree who prefer a professional career over physically demanding trade occupations.

  • Course: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary).
  • Recommended location: Western Australia, where selected one-year teaching programs are recognised.
  • Study duration: Approximately 1 year.
  • Estimated tuition fees: AUD $40,000 (e.g. Edith Cowan University).
  • Potential PR pathways: Skilled Independent (189), State Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491), subject to eligibility.

Important consideration: AITSL generally requires four years of relevant higher education and specified English proficiency, including IELTS 7.0 in Reading and Writing and 8.0 in Listening and Speaking, unless an exemption applies. Western Australia is currently the recommended state for this one-year teaching pathway, as selected qualifications, including Edith Cowan University’s Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary), are recognised for provisional teacher registration in WA, subject to eligibility.

State nomination programs and course availability can change, the listed pathways are options to assess only rather than guaranteed routes to PR.

How to Make the Most of Your 485 Visa

Although further study can help you expand your migration options, choosing a course solely because an occupation appears on a skilled occupation list is not always the best approach.

Before committing to another qualification, we recommend considering the following:

  1. Review your existing PR options first. You may already qualify for pathways through your current occupation, employment or employer sponsorship.
  2. Choose a course with clear migration relevance. Check whether the qualification can lead to a suitable skills assessment and an eligible occupation.
  3. Plan around your visa expiry. Consider the time required for study, practical placements, employment and skills assessment.
  4. Research state nomination requirements. Different states have different occupation priorities, residence requirements and nomination criteria.
  5. Start planning early. Do not wait until the final months of your 485 visa before exploring your next steps.

Remember that completing additional study does not guarantee permanent residency or extend your existing 485 visa.
