Australia continues to face a strong shortage of skilled tradespeople, driven by major infrastructure projects, housing demand, and ongoing development across both metropolitan and regional areas. As a result, trade-related occupations consistently remain on Australia’s skilled occupation lists.
For international students and skilled migrants, studying a trade offers a practical, job-ready pathway with strong employment prospects and a realistic route to Permanent Residency (PR). With faster workforce entry, competitive pay, and long-term demand, trades remain one of Australia’s most reliable migration pathways.
In this blog, we explore why trades are so valuable in Australia, who this pathway suits best, how the study-to-PR journey works, and which trade courses are most popular.
Australia’s Ongoing Skills Shortage in Trades
Australia is continuously facing critical skills shortages across construction and trade-related occupations. From residential housing and commercial builds to large-scale infrastructure and civil projects, the demand for qualified tradespeople remains strong nationwide.
Occupations such as carpenters, painters, tilers, and construction trades workers are regularly identified as shortage roles, particularly in regional areas. This consistent demand means:
- Strong job availability during and after study
- Higher chances of employer sponsorship or state nomination
- A clearer pathway toward permanent residency compared to many oversupplied professions
Beyond migration advantages, trades are also financially rewarding. Qualified tradespeople in Australia are well paid, with average annual salaries commonly ranging from:
- $65,000–$90,000 for qualified trades workers
- $90,000+ for experienced or specialised tradespeople
- Higher earning potential for those working overtime, on large projects, or in regional areas
With strong wages, stable employment, and long-term demand, trades remain one of Australia’s most reliable career pathways.
Who Is This Pathway Best For?
The trades pathway is particularly suitable for people who:
- Have weaker English compared to academic-heavy professions
- May not score highly under the skilled migration points test initially
- Prefer hands-on, practical work over classroom-based careers
- Are comfortable with physically demanding or outdoor working environments
- Want a faster transition into the workforce
Compared to professional roles that often require high English scores, lengthy work experience, or competitive points, trades offer a more accessible entry point for many migrants who are motivated and willing to put in the work.

From Study to PR: How the Trades Pathway Works
While exact requirements vary depending on occupation, state, and visa type, the general construction and trades pathway typically follows this structure:
Step 1: Complete a Recognised Trade Qualification
Start by studying an Australian trade qualification that aligns with a skilled occupation (e.g., Certificate III in Carpentry or Painting & Decorating). These courses are industry-focused, practical and recognised for migration purposes.
Step 2: Obtain a Provisional Skills Assessment
Before you can progress with migration, you must get a Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) with Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). This confirms your identity and that your Australian qualification is valid and relevant to your nominated trade occupation.
Step 3: Work and Build Experience
After graduation you can work in your trade (e.g. on a Temporary Graduate Visa, subclass 485). During this period you log and document your work experience, which is required for a full skills assessment recognised for migration.
Step 4: Complete a Skills Assessment Pathway
Depending on where you studied, where your qualification was obtained, and your work experience, you will need to complete the appropriate Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) skills assessment pathway:
✔ Job Ready Program (JRP):
For international graduates who completed their trade qualification in Australia. You will work in your nominated occupation and collect employment evidence (typically at least 12 months of full-time work) while TRA assesses your skills and workplace competence.
✔ Migration Skills Assessment (MSA):
For applicants not assessed under an offshore assessment program, who hold a relevant qualification and work experience and are ready to apply for skilled migration directly. This pathway is generally used where the occupation or country is not covered under OSAP.
✔ Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP):
For applicants who completed their training outside Australia in occupations and countries covered under the OSAP framework.
OSAP can apply to:
- Applicants with a relevant overseas qualification, or
- Applicants without a formal qualification, provided they have at least 5 years of full-time, relevant work experience
If your occupation and country fall within the OSAP list, you must complete your skills assessment through OSAP. If your occupation or country is not covered under OSAP, then the MSA pathway will apply instead.
Once completed successfully, TRA issues a positive skills assessment outcome used in your visa application.
Step 5: Apply for Skilled Migration Visa
With a positive skills assessment, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a skilled visa such as:
- Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)
- Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190)
- Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491)
Points are calculated based on your age, English ability, employment experience, qualification and other factors. Use our interactive Công cụ tính điểm EOI to calculate your current points.
Step 6: Receive Permanent Residency
After an invitation to apply and meeting all visa criteria (skills, points, health and character), your skilled visa can be granted – giving you permanent residency in Australia.
Final Thoughts: Is Studying a Trade Worth It?
For many migrants, studying trades in Australia is one of the most practical and achievable ways to build a long-term future. With strong job prospects, attractive salaries, and ongoing migration demand, trades continue to offer stability in an increasingly competitive migration environment.
While the work can be physically demanding, the rewards – career security, income growth, and permanent residency make it a compelling option for the right candidate.
