Step 1: Complete a Recognised Trade Qualification

Step 2: Obtain a Provisional Skills Assessment
Before you can progress with migration, you must get a Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) with Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). This confirms your identity and that your Australian qualification is valid and relevant to your nominated trade occupation.
Step 3: Work and Build Experience
After graduation you can work in your trade (e.g. on a Temporary Graduate Visa, subclass 485). During this period you log and document your work experience, which is required for a full skills assessment recognised for migration.
Step 4: Complete a Skills Assessment Pathway
Depending on where you studied, where your qualification was obtained, and your work experience, you will need to complete the appropriate Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) skills assessment pathway:
✔ Job Ready Program (JRP):
For international graduates who completed their trade qualification in Australia. You will work in your nominated occupation and collect employment evidence (typically at least 12 months of full-time work) while TRA assesses your skills and workplace competence.
✔ Migration Skills Assessment (MSA):
For applicants not assessed under an offshore assessment program, who hold a relevant qualification and work experience and are ready to apply for skilled migration directly. This pathway is generally used where the occupation or country is not covered under OSAP.
✔ Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP):
For applicants who completed their training outside Australia in occupations and countries covered under the OSAP framework.
OSAP can apply to:
- Applicants with a relevant overseas qualification, or
- Applicants without a formal qualification, provided they have at least 5 years of full-time, relevant work experience
If your occupation and country fall within the OSAP list, you must complete your skills assessment through OSAP. If your occupation or country is not covered under OSAP, then the MSA pathway will apply instead.
