What is a Parent Visa?
A Parent Visa allows parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to migrate to Australia. There are several types of parent visas available, including permanent visas (Subclass 103, 143) and temporary visas (Subclass 870).
Parent visas are designed to help families reunite in Australia, allowing parents to live with their children and grandchildren. The type of visa you choose depends on your circumstances, budget, and how quickly you need your parents to arrive in Australia.
Types of Parent Visas
Permanent Parent Visas
Subclass 103 (Parent Visa): Non-contributory permanent visa. Lower cost but very long processing times (currently 30+ years).
Subclass 143 (Contributory Parent Visa): Contributory permanent visa. Higher cost but faster processing (typically 4–6 years). Requires significant financial contribution.
Subclass 173 (Contributory Parent Temporary Visa): Two-stage process. First temporary visa (173), then permanent visa (143). Allows parents to come to Australia sooner.
Temporary Parent Visas
Subclass 870 (Sponsored Parent Temporary Visa): A temporary visa allowing parents to stay in Australia for up to 5 years at a time, with a maximum stay of 10 years. This visa does not lead to permanent residency but allows parents to visit and stay with their children for extended periods.

Balance of Family Test
The Balance of Family Test requires that at least half of your children (or more children in Australia than in any other single country) must be:
- Australian citizens
- Australian permanent residents
- Eligible New Zealand citizens
- Living in Australia

Processing times for parent visas vary significantly:
- Subclass 103 (Non-contributory): Currently 30+ years (extremely long wait)
- Subclass 143 (Contributory): Typically 4–6 years (much faster)
- Subclass 173 (Contributory Temporary): Typically 2–3 years for first stage
- Subclass 870 (Temporary): Typically 3–6 months (fastest option)
