Working holidays in Australia, combining employment with unforgettable travel adventures.

The Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program is a popular cultural exchange initiative that allows young adults to have an extended holiday in Australia and fund their trip through short-term work. It’s designed for those who want to experience life in Australia without committing to a long-term skilled or student visa.

The program consists of two main visa subclasses, depending on your country of citizenship. Both visas allow you to stay for 12 months initially, with the possibility of extending for a second and even a third year.

Working Holiday Visa Subclasses

The Working Holiday Pathway: Extensions

One of the program’s key attractions is the ability to extend your stay by undertaking specific types of work in designated regional areas of Australia.

  1. First Year (Initial Visa): The first visa is granted for 12 months, allowing you to live, work (generally for no more than 6 months with one employer), and study for up to 4 months.
  2. Second Year Visa: To be eligible for a second 12-month visa, you must complete 3 months (88 days) of “specified work” in a designated regional area during your first year.
  3. Third Year Visa: To be eligible for a third 12-month visa, you must complete 6 months (179 days) of “specified work” in a designated regional area during your second year.

“Specified work” typically includes jobs in industries like tourism and hospitality in northern or remote Australia, agriculture, fishing, construction, and bushfire recovery work.

Turn Your Adventure into a Permanent Stay

A Working Holiday is more than just a trip; it’s a unique opportunity to lay the groundwork for a future in Australia. The time you spend living and working here allows you to gain valuable local work experience, build a professional network, and connect with potential employers who may be willing to sponsor you.

This Australian experience can be the key to transitioning onto other visa pathways. Many Working Holiday makers find opportunities that lead to an Employer-Sponsored visa (subclass 482) or use their skilled work to meet the criteria for General Skilled Migration (subclasses 190 or 491).
