For many international students, studying in Australia is both exciting and increasingly challenging.
Tuition fees continue to rise, entry requirements are becoming more competitive, and for many students, the pressure to choose the right course is higher than ever – not just for education, but for future career and migration opportunities.
But what if there was an institution that offers a different approach?
One that focuses on courses aligned with job shortages, backed by strong industry connections, delivers high-quality education, and does so at a more affordable cost compared to traditional universities – often saving as much as $65,000 in tuition fees.
This is where TAFE SA comes in.
Understanding TAFE SA: A Different Kind of Institution
TAFE SA is the only government-owned vocational education provider in South Australia, with a core focus on delivering training that meets real industry needs. Its role goes beyond education – it is designed to address current and future skill shortages across the state.
Because of this, many of its courses are closely aligned with occupations that are in demand, which can naturally support stronger long-term career outcomes.
Each year, TAFE SA trains over 70,000 domestic students, with programs designed in consultation with industry professionals. In practical terms, this often translates to something important for students: qualifications that are widely recognised by local employers – a crucial factor when entering the workforce.
University Packaged Program: A Program That Does It All
TAFE SA’s University Packaged Programs offer the best of all worlds:
- Helping you become job-ready,
- Offering guaranteed entry into QS Top 100 University in South Australia, and
- Allowing you to graduate at a significantly lower cost compared to the traditional university pathway.
Let’s take a closer look.
✔ Study Structure: A More Practical Start to Your Study Journey
TAFE SA places strong emphasis on preparing students to be job-ready, and this is reflected in how its university packaged programs are structured.
Instead of going straight into a bachelor’s degree, you will typically start with a diploma or associate degree – qualifications that emphasise practical, hands-on learning.
This structure allows students to build real skills early, rather than waiting until the later stages of their degree.
By the time they progress into their bachelor’s degree, they already hold a recognised qualification and have developed practical experience – making it easier to transition into part-time work within their field and begin building relevant experience while studying.
✔ A Direct Pathway to University
TAFE SA’s University Packaged Programs are structured to provide a clear pathway into top South Australian universities, including the University of Adelaide and Flinders University.
As long as you have successfully completed your TAFE SA qualification, you can transition into your packaged university degree.
In many cases, this pathway can also offer:
- a more accessible entry point compared to direct university admission
- lower English requirements
- and no need to meet certain prerequisite subjects, as these are covered during the TAFE stage
✔ A More Affordable Way to Get There
Cost is often one of the biggest concerns for students and families.
By completing part of the journey through TAFE SA before progressing to university, students can significantly reduce their overall tuition fees – sometimes by a substantial margin while still graduating with a university degree.
At the same time, the earlier exposure to practical skills can improve employability during the study period itself.
✔ Available Study Areas
There are a diverse range of packages available. Some of the key study areas include:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Visual Effects
- Marketing & Communications
- Early Childhood Education and Care
- Nursing
- Information and Technology
How This Works in Practice: Case Study
Let’s take an example.
Sam is an international student who wants to become an Electrical Engineer and eventually obtain permanent residency in Australia. Instead of choosing a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree at the Adelaide University (AU), he chose the TAFE SA University Packaged Program.
Program Structure & Fees Comparison

*Tuition fees referenced are 2026 indicative fees provided by the institution’s website. Fees may change at any time.
From this example, we can see that Sam is able to save over $66,000 across his study journey, while still graduating from Adelaide University within a similar timeframe.
Guaranteed Entry to Top South Australian Universities
Because of TAFE SA’s program structure, once Sam successfully completes his TAFE SA qualification, he is guaranteed entry into Adelaide University.
This allows him to bypass the higher requirements and prerequisites set by the university. For example, Sam only needs to meet TAFE SA’s English requirement of an overall IELTS 6.0, compared to Adelaide University’s requirement of 6.5. He will not be reassessed upon entry into university.
An Extra Edge for Employability
Through this pathway, Sam graduates from TAFE SA with an associate degree accredited by Engineers Australia (EA).
This means he enters university already holding a recognised qualification, with practical skills and experience – giving him a stronger chance of securing part-time work related to his field while studying.
This is particularly important for building experience towards skills assessment and future permanent residency pathways.
In contrast, if Sam had chosen direct university entry, he would not hold a recognised qualification until graduation – making it significantly more difficult to secure relevant work experience during his studies.
Outcome
Through this pathway, Sam is able to:
- gain two industry-recognised, EA accredited qualifications;
- leverage his EA-accredited qualification to build relevant work experience during Year 3 of his degree, gaining an early advantage for his PR pathway;
- graduate from one of Australia’s top universities;
- build a stronger pathway towards permanent residency;
- and save over $66,000 across his study journey.
Sam’s example highlights the potential of a program backed by the South Australian Government and leading universities in the state.
